Christmas for the Chickens

Now, this may not look like much to you...

But my chickens have been dying for a dust bath since we moved here. I got them a kitty litter pan and filled it with ash from our wood stove and put it in their run. It took them a few days to figure it out, but Bert was bathing away in it today.

They get into this weird zone when they dust bathe. I wish it were big enough for more, they like to do it with each other. You can see Olive (I just named her) hanging out next to the tub. She was flopping around on frozen ground, going through the motions. Here's Bert coming back to reality.

In a cloud of dust.

Her mellowness stayed long enough for me to get some pictures of her. They are usually moving so fast they all turn out blurry.

I think her colors are so pretty. She visited the nest area today - twice! I think she's getting ready to lay too. I can't wait to see what color egg she lays.

My little miss also stood still long enough to get a few pictures. I think it's the cold! They have been getting warm mash twice a day to try and keep up with their energy expenditures. She has been letting me put her in my coat to warm her up. If I leave her head out and she can see her friends she is quite tolerant - I think she may even enjoy it.

Only one more day of below freezing highs and we are back to normal and that means happy chickens!

i love olive's name! it's the name i've requested if/when my parents get a black lab puppy :)

what about one of those under the bed type storage boxes - they're longer and maybe two could get dusty together?

i can't wait to see what color eggs bert lays! exciting that she's showing signs of starting.
