Here's what we've been up to:
Eating from the garden
Liesel's wedding in Idaho
Building a photo booth
Processing 50 pounds of apricots. What? It was a good deal!
I picked 30 pounds of the most beautiful Bing cherries I've ever seen. I've been eating, jamming, canning and freezing them.
Beets!
I love them.
I also picked enough pie cherries for 3 pies. I pitted them, added the rest of the ingredients and froze them in pie pans lined with saran wrap. Into freezer bags and they are ready to go. Helpful hint: When you find gorgeous pie cherries on the side of the road and you can't resist, be prepared for worms. Soak the cherries whole in cold water for an hour and most of them will make their way out and can be rinsed way.
The garden today:
It's loving this heat, finally. Although if we could keep it around 80 for the wedding, that would be great!

Ha! Did you notice the owl in our picture? Also, I saw my first Evening Grosbeak this weekend, a pair of them. Pretty!
fun pictures! a couple questions:
beets. how do you cook them? i'm so curious about them, but i've never tried them. how should a beginner beet eater prepare them?
cherries. do you freeze them in half like that? i've never thought to freeze them, but after you said on facebook that you like them better frozen than fresh, i'm intrigued.
Liesel - yes I noticed the owl after I posted this! Grosbeaks are pretty!
Sarah - Honestly I think beets from a can are delicious, and maybe that is where I would start. You just dump the whole can (be careful of splashes it really stains) into a sauce pan and heat. Add a little butter and salt and voila! For fresh beets I usually peel them and cut them and broil them in oil or butter. This time I cut them and boiled them, added butter and salt.
Yes I froze the cherries like that, but you can freeze them whole as well. Try it!
I know the feeling of the lazy, but crazy summer. Your garden is looking amazing! Next year you have to try some flowers. I have been looking more closely at them and was outside a restaurant examining one when the harder came over and pulled it out of the ground for me (she called I a native primrose).
I know I am going to be jealous of your put up fruit in winter. Where did you get it? I am going to have a bunch of figs and plums from my yard soon. Bj has devised a system he says will ensure nearly 100% recovery of the plums, LOL!
Amber - I would love to do some flowers, next year for sure! Especially since right now all the bees are scrounging around for food (I saw 4 bees in one squash flower the other day). I'd like to be able to provide them with another food source.
I got the apricots at that fruit stand just outside Corvallis on 34 - Jim's (?) for $.72/lb (the first guy quoted me too low and they honored it). The cherries I picked at Root Orchards in Mosier for $1/lb. Pie cherries just a short walk from my house!
That's exactly how Bill and I look when we work on projects together ;)!
I never knew that about cherries and worms...
Really looking forward to seeing more wedding photos. Loved the blue lanterns! Can I have some?
Hey Julie,
How many and what size were you thinking? We have from 6 inches to 24 inches, 3 shades of blue. A light ice blue, turquoise, and a nice water blue.
